Shutting Down Our Link Directories

As of this morning we are shutting down our link directories articleweb.us, linkdir.us, and linkdir.org.

These directories were getting hammered with spam listings and were becoming impossible to sift through every day to find only one or two valid listings. We apologize to everyone who followed the rules and listed their great sites but once again the spammers ruin the day. HWC cannot afford to be listed as a spam directory as it would hurt search engine results to our other sites which are the lifeblood of the company.

Associate-O-Matic v4.2.0 was released today. This is an important release as it incorporates changes in Amazon’s API. Come August 15, 2009 all prior versions of AOM will not work. Remember to upgrade your store software soon! With the update you need to register with Amazon Web Services (AWS), for free, to get your Amazon Access Key ID and Amazon Secret Access Key if you already don’t have one. If you were a basic user like me you probably just signed up for the affiliate program and not through AWS as well.

One of the most important parts of SEO work is having a good, up-to-date sitemap that you can send to search engines on a regular basis. I have been using XML-Sitemaps.com’s unlimited XML, Text, HTML sitemap generator for about a year now. It is a very sturdy program that just runs through my cron jobs nightly without any issues at all, ever. Once you set up the configuration on how you want your sitemap, the program just runs flawlessly, spitting out nicely formatted sitemaps.

Here is the brief summary of its features straight from their website*:

1. It generates any kind of sitemap you require: XML, Text, HTML site maps.
2. It is developed in PHP languages and works with most web-server’s configurations
3. Fast and easy installation onto the same host that should be crawled
4. Flexible configuration that allows you to set any sitemap parameters and crawler settings
5. Support of LARGE websites, dividing the sitemap on the parts per 50,000 URLs each and Sitemap Index file according to the Google sitemap protocol.

8. User-friendly progress indication for sitemap generation in manual mode
9. Allows to setup the cron job to create sitemaps without a user interaction
10. Informs (ping) Google automatically when sitemap generation is complete
11. Website structure analysis feature represents the tree-like layout of your pages distribution within folders
12. The script collects all generated sitemaps details and provides the log changes in it, including the number (and the lists) of added and removed pages.
13. The broken links are detected by the application and reported on the special page, providing also the URLs pages that refer to these bad links.

The unlimited generator is only $19.99 and can be used on all of your sites, no limitations on how many times you can install it. The program runs a PHP script right on your web server where you host your site.

They offer a free online sitemap generator for those that may just want to create one for their own personal site. The free online sitemap generator will only index 500 pages.

Selling A Domain Name

I have been in talks with a few people over the past month and a half about possibly selling one of my domain names. It apparently caught their eye and they contacted me. I then evaluated the domain and found out its worth almost as much as a new car, which excited me. I haven’t sold any domain names before, but the process is very long drawn out. I have received very little response lately after the initial hype that fell through due to its high value. Its a little depressing to know you have something worth so much but yet you can’t sell it.
